 FAQs

  • Office payments can be made by check, credit card, or HSA card. We can provide you with a copy of your office note with billable codes and diagnoses that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Dr. Mitchell is no longer a Medicare provider, so Medicare will not reimburse her services.

  • The answer is yes; I still practice gastroenterology, but I no longer do procedures as of 4/2021. I can refer you to excellent local gastroenterologists if you need a procedure or more advanced, traditional GI care.

  • Some insurance companies will reimburse the patient for their out-of-pocket expenses. You can call your insurance company and provide them with Dr. Mitchell’s name and her “NPI” (physician identification number) before your appointment to get additional information.

  • Yes, Dr. Mitchell will provide limited prescriptions if she believes they will improve gut health and disease. Gutwell Medical does not write long-term prescriptions (> 3 month supply) without seeing the patient regularly. An established patient must be seen every 3 months for at least 30 minutes to continue having prescriptions written.

  • No, you will need to have a primary care doctor who is your main doctor, especially if pharmaceutical medication maintenance and management are needed.

  • Dr. Mitchell is only licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado, and patients will have to establish care in the state of Colorado. Subsequent visits can be made by telehealth. She believes she can give the best care when she can see a patient in person and perform examinations.

  • Because of the costs and time involved with travel, we want the initial visit to be as comprehensive as possible. Before arrival, Dr. Mitchell will review medical records and contact the patient to discuss if additional testing may be beneficial before arrival. This may include SIBO breath testing, stool studies, labs, etc.

  • The appointment will be more productive if records (including the completed intake form) are sent before arrival. Records that Dr. Mitchell needs to have at the visit include a copy of any labs in the prior two years, GI procedure notes (bring the color photos), GI pathology reports, and any x-ray studies related to your visit.

  • Your initial office visit will be 70 to 90 minutes with Dr. Mitchell, who will review your medical history and symptoms and make recommendations with a plan. She can perform physical and rectal exams and test stool for blood if needed. She spends time educating patients on gut health as Dr. Mitchell believes that to make changes truly, she wants patients to understand why they are making diet and lifestyle changes. If time permits, she can demonstrate ideas for nutrition, smoothies, and meal plans.

  • No, because patients need to have diagnosis codes for labs through insurance, and we don’t have diagnosis codes for many of the tests we order. Patients end up spending more money because the labs are not correct when they come initially. It is highly encouraged that the cash-pay pricing is to make sure all of Dr. Mitchell’s preferred labs are ready for your initial appointment.

  • We do not currently. Our primary goal is to provide the best advice in the initial visit and be aware of finances and what feels right for the patient.

  • No, our supplements are recommendations and not mandatory. Our supplements are extensively vetted and researched by Dr. Mitchell.

  • Our products are shipped directly to us and are not carried on third-party platforms, so quality is always controlled. They are third-party tested and come from two of the most highly-regarded supplement companies.

  • Dr. Mitchell is passionate about gut health and believes some patients could jump-start healing through supplementation. Dr. Mitchell hopes this will create more access to functional healing for all.

  • A superbill is a document showing that you received medical treatment without using insurance. You submit a superbill to your insurance and might be able to receive reimbursement. Request a superbill from our office, and we will document your spending and consultations with Dr. Mitchell. Note: these are not available for labs or supplements.

Dr. Mitchell is not a Medicare provider.

  • Absolutely! We encourage patients to record their visits. The initial visit is comprehensive, and it can be helpful to have a recording to refer to. Patients also receive copies of Dr. Mitchell's notes.

  • Follow up appointments are encouraged, especially in the beginning of your journey. Once patients enter "maintenance" where their symptoms are controlled, they are typically seen once a year.

  • Dr. Mitchell does not treat hormones. We refer to Dr. Natalie Kunsman who manages menopause, perimenopause, and more.
